MindsEye, the long-awaited debut title from Build A Rocket Boy, has quickly become 2025’s worst-rated game, sparking a firestorm of criticism and viral attention across the gaming community. Released on June 13 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store, this single-player action-adventure thriller aimed to deliver a tightly crafted, narrative-driven experience set in the futuristic desert metropolis of Redrock. However, the game’s uninspired gameplay and lackluster design have left players and critics profoundly disappointed.
Gameplay Falls Flat
Despite its promising premise involving rogue military factions, hostile robots, and a diverse arsenal of weapons, MindsEye fails to capitalize on its sci-fi potential. The fast-paced third-person combat feels generic and repetitive, lacking the tactical depth and variety needed to keep players engaged. Even the inclusion of energy weapons and nano grenades can’t save the game from its mediocre gameplay loop.

A Monument to Failed Ambition
GamesRadar described MindsEye as “an uninspired and forgettable sci-fi action adventure” that feels more like a background Netflix movie than an immersive gaming experience. The linear story, intended to be a focused narrative journey, instead comes across as shallow and cliché-ridden, failing to invest players in the game’s world or characters.
Even more damning, IMDb’s verdict called MindsEye “a monument to failed ambition and terrible design,” warning even fans of notoriously bad games to steer clear. The game’s poor reception has quickly made it the lowest-rated title of the year on Metacritic and other review aggregators.
A Disappointing Debut
For a studio founded by former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies, MindsEye represents a shocking misstep. Instead of delivering an innovative and engaging sci-fi adventure, Build A Rocket Boy has produced a game that feels outdated, uninspired, and utterly forgettable. As the gaming community grapples with the disappointment of MindsEye, it remains to be seen how the studio will respond and whether they can bounce back from this disastrous debut.
